.jobs Domain Name

Connect the dots between you and job seekers!

Designed to serve the Human Resources Management community around the world, the .jobs domain extension provides a simple, fast and consistent destination for employment information and job opportunities at your company.

Here’s how you benefit from a .jobs domain name*:

  • Position and place your company’s HR interests on the Web using your www.“yourcompanyname”.jobsdomain.
  • Provide a direct route for job seekers to specific and compelling career information.
  • Eliminate congestion, confusion and distraction on your home page.
  • Compliment and enhance your company’s current best practices in hiring.
  • Create a more streamlined recruiting process for HR professionals.
  • Backed by the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) with over 190,000 members worldwide.

Best of all, .jobs is a restricted domain, meaning applicants will be subject to a verification process to confirm they qualify for a .jobs domain name—no cyber-squatting, no name hoarding, no hassle.

.jobs is a top-level internet domain format approved by ICANN on April 8, 2005 as a sponsored TLD as part of the second group of new TLD applications submitted in 2004. It is restricted to employment-related sites. It entered the root in September, 2005, and began accepting registrations later in the year.

The intended use is for companies and organizations to register some version of their corporate names in the .jobs domain and use it for a site specifically aimed at those seeking employment with that company, as distinguished from general corporate and marketing sites in other top level domains such as .com. For instance, asda.jobs is a site giving information about jobs available at British supermarket chain Asda. The licensed operator of the .jobs domain format is Employ MediaLLC.

It has been suggested that subdomains of other domains, such as jobs.example.com, can be used without requiring any new registrations on the part of the companies involved. However, companies have not standardized on any such scheme for naming their job sites, so the proponents of .jobs feel it can gain a market presence by allowing recruiters to communicate a simple, direct URL destination of employment opportunities to job seekers.

The rules of registration in .jobs are designed to prevent abuses by non-qualified parties by way of its validating each request for registration. Unlike .com and most other top-level domains, .jobs does not offer real-time registrations.

Example of use

In late 2005, katrina.jobs was set up by CareerBuilder as a source for job information for those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Requirements

Who qualifies for .jobs?
.jobs has been designated specifically for hiring managers in every business. It’s for those tasked with communicating employment opportunities at their organization along with those managing other human resource elements in their business. The format is simply: www.“yourcompanyname”.jobs.

.jobs is a restricted name space. The ability to secure a company name in .jobs is restricted to those that meet the following criteria:

  • Tasked with hiring or other HR duties on behalf of their own employer organization;
  • Authorized to purchase their “yourcompanyname”.jobson behalf of their employer organization;

  • Who agree to abide by the .jobs Use Policies; and
  • Who agree to abide by the SHRM Code of Professional Ethics

Rules

.jobs Domain Name Rules
Registrations must be “yourcompanyname” .com domain, where “yourcompanyname” is either: (a) the legal trade name of the employer (minus identifiers such as “the” or “inc” or “gmbh” etc.); (b) a name by which the employer is commonly known; or (c) contains either (a) or (b).

For example: The Hewlett-Packard Development Company LP may request:

Hewlett-Packard.jobs
HewlettPackard.jobs
HPsystems.jobs
HP-financial.jobs
HPprogramming.jobs

The domain can not be on one of the reserved lists, such as ICANN’s reserved list, occupational (e.g., nursing.jobs, accounting.jobs) and industry (e.g., retail.jobs, manufacturing.jobs, recruiting.jobs) identifiers, geographic names (such as cities, regions, zip codes, etc.), profane words (either by themselves or in combination, such as “blow”) and others (such as generic terms). .jobs will maintain these reserved lists and your requested domain name will be checked against them.

Usage Restrictions

Websites at .jobs domains may only be used to post information about your company, such as your own job postings, company culture, company information, etc.

  • Third party job postings (i.e., job boards) are not allowed.
  • Non-HR-related uses are not allowed.
  • The registrant is responsible for the use of the domain, including to a licensed third party.

.jobs will enforce the use restrictions and will shut down and, if necessary, cancel a registration if the registrant does not comply.

Verification Process

All .jobs domain name applications will be verified by the registry operator, Employ Media. Some form of proof that the applicant has rights (not a legal term in this context) to the requested name must be submitted with the application. In most cases the applicants existing URL will be sufficient, and that’s what we will be using.

Employ Media may contact the applicant directly if they have any questions during the verification process. Most applications will be verified within 3 business days if there are no questions or problems.
